Chernobyl Exclusion Zone will produce energy again

A 1-gigawatt solar power plant is announced to be built in an unspecified region of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, which is known as one of the scariest places on Earth with the lethal radiation level. The building is claimed to be built early next year by a pair of Chinese companies.

After the nuclear plant’s horrific meltdown, Soviet officials set up a restricted area around the site called the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, or simply The Zone. Even though it’s been 30 years since the accident, this restricted area is still exceptionally large, taking up approximately 1,000 square miles (2,600 square km) of space in Ukraine’s Kiev and Zhytomyr regions. Ukraine’s government permitted the project with hope to see the zone, which is mostly forest and marshland, produce energy again in a “safer” way.

The solar firm is to be built by two Chinese companies, GCL-SI and CCEC. CCEC will act as the general contractor for the project, with GCL offering consultancy and planning as well as PV facilities. Comments made by a GCL-SI manager suggested that the plant would be built in an area where the radiation is under control. The site itself has already gone through several rounds of inspections by the company’s technicians.

"There will be remarkable social benefits and economical ones as we try to renovate the once damaged area with green and renewable energy,” said Mr. Shu Hua, Chairman of GCL-SI. “We are glad that we are making joint efforts with Ukraine to rebuild the community for the local people.” The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, as scary as it might seem to outsiders, finally appears to be opening up. Once it comes to a success, a lot more damaged land all over the world will be reused and renewed for alternative energy and we then have more evidence to believe human can settle down everywhere on Earth.
